Our 10th Good Grief 5k
When my husband Jake died suddenly on an idle Saturday morning in August 2015, my life and my daughter's life were changed forever. The loss was disorienting to both of us, particularly to a 5 year-old who lacked any kind of language about the death of a parent.
When we started participating in Good Grief a few weeks later, our lives changed again. The peer support Melody received was a lifeline in the turbulent waters we found ourselves in. To be able to hang out with other kids who's dad had died and talk about it (or just play together) was instrumental in our recovery. As she said one time, "My friends at school don't know what it's like for your dad to die, but my friends at Good Grief do." She is a well-adjusted high school freshman now, and I'm confident our family of 2 would not be where we are not without the free and unlimited support Good Grief provided us when we needed it most.
For the 10th time, I will be participating in this event, which helps us to honor and remember those who we have lost, while creating community at a time when isolation and loneliness are all around us. I decided to join the event to help raise awareness for grieving families and to help raise critical funds for Good Grief. Good Grief builds resilience in children, strengthens families, and empowers communities to grow from loss and adversity. Good Grief is 100% privately funded, and their programming is free of charge to all participants for as long as they need the support.
